What is Autism?
Autism is a neurological disorder and/or medical condition that interferes with typical experiences such as what a person sees, hears or otherwise senses. This disorder affects approximately 1 in 110 children in the United States. In some states, the numbers are even greater!
People with autism often become confused and respond inappropriately in social situations. Autism presents itself in varying degrees from mild to severe and is considered a 'spectrum' disorder.
The Autism umbrella includes Autistic Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.
Through education, biomedical interventions and intensive therapy, many people with autism can improve and learn to compensate for their disability.
